The protection and promotion of geographical indications is an ongoing
effort at both the international and national level. These efforts attempt
to use the international and national regimes available for geographical
indications or to create wholly new mechanisms that will help preserve
and promote traditionally produced products.
Some of these efforts are networks of individuals or organizations.
For example, recently an international network of producers was formed
to protect and promote geographical indications. This network, called ORIGIN,
is designed to facilitate technical exchanges to provide producers with a voice
in international discussions. Slow Food is an international movement of individuals
interested in the protection of the right to taste. Many of its efforts are
connected to the protection of foods that may be designated with geographical
indications. Still other groups are more traditional NGOs such as Oldways, a
food issues think tank, whose efforts to translate nutrition science into the
language of food often serves to promote the use of traditional foods.
Finally, networks of NGOs may be engaged in efforts that are closely connected
with geographic indications.
The following links provide information about groups such as those above that
are active in the promotion and protection of geographical indications in practice.
In addition, links are provided to news about these efforts and proposals for new
efforts. Contributions on new developments and initiatives are welcomed.
